Synopsis

Act I, Scene 1

It’s Christmas Eve, and everyone is excited at the Counselor Stahlbaum’s house! The guests arrive, the children laugh and play, waiting to see the beautiful Christmas tree and the gifts. A special guest, the mysterious Master of Dolls, comes dressed like a wizard. He amazes everyone with magical clockwork dolls that come to life and dance. He gives little Marie a funny wooden Nutcracker. Her brother Fritz tries to play with it and accidentally breaks it! Marie feels sad and gently cares for her new toy while everyone dances one last time. The party ends, and the house grows quiet as Christmas night begins.

Act I, Scene 2

Marie falls asleep with her Nutcracker. At midnight, the room begins to change—walls move, the Christmas tree grows taller, and all the toys come alive! Suddenly, mice led by the scary Mouse King appear. The Nutcracker bravely leads his toy soldiers into battle. When Marie sees her Nutcracker in danger, she throws her slipper at the Mouse King to save him! The mice run away, and a wonderful surprise happens—the Nutcracker turns into a handsome Prince! He thanks Marie and invites her on a magical journey. They dance among the falling snowflakes as they travel to a new land.

Act II

Marie and the Prince arrive in the sparkling City of Sweets, ruled by the beautiful Fairy and the kind Drosselmeyer. Dancers from all around the world perform to celebrate their victory. Everything is full of joy, color, and music! But soon the dream fades away, and Marie wakes up on Christmas morning with her Nutcracker toy in her arms—wondering if it was all just a dream.
